Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children first came into being a year ago. Originally
it was meant to be a visual presentation only. Visual Works [a company who works
on FMV sequences for Square] had chosen the theme of FFVII for their presentation.
They worked with Square on the project, and eventually it was decided to be released
as a sequel to the popular game.
But why a movie and not a game? As Visual Works are a CG development company and
not a company who could produce games is wasn't possible to adapt their material
into a game.
Square-Enix also mentioned in a further press conference that a remake of the PlayStation
classic would not be made due to the fact that the game can be played on the PlayStation
2 platform. That if one day there were no backward compatibility, then it may be
considered.
As a result we will be seeing high quality CG movies, much like those from the movie
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. However, as Square Pictures is no longer a company,
Square-Enix will not be able to use any of their resources. However, they would
likely be able to gain information from any staff who may have been with the movie
company.
At the time of writing this article [October 2003] the movie is said to be 10% completed
only. Many of the characters have not even been developed yet, but the storyline
has been written.
The movie is planned to run for 60 minutes, and is expected to receive a Japanese
and eventually an English release a couple of months later.
